The Bristal Assisted Living held the Grand Opening of its fourth Suffolk County community, and the tenth on Long Island, at 5535 Expressway Drive North in Holtsville to meet the growing needs of a segment of the region’s population that insists on enhancing their quality of life while remaining close to the families they love during their retirement years.
The Bristal Assisted Living communities have been critically acclaimed for their elegant surroundings, active recreational calendar and personal care assistance, provided by a caring and seasoned staff. The Bristal offers the highest standards in design, comfort and safety in a community that recognizes that assisted living can, and should, foster feelings of independence, security and socialization.

“The Bristal Assisted Living is well renowned for the services they provide to our aging residents,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “We are happy that this remarkable organization chose to make such a significant investment here in Suffolk County, and we are particularly excited for our senior residents who will now have a high-quality option for assisted living in close proximity to their relatives and friends, while also receiving necessary specialized care and attention, especially for the individuals living with Alzheimer’s.”
Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “So many people from our growing senior population need care in an assisted living setting and they want to stay close to their family and friends. The Bristal offers them the opportunity to live a full and rich life, and I am happy to welcome their second location in the Town of Brookhaven.”

“Watching a loved one age can bring with it unique challenges, but we in Suffolk County are lucky to have professionals like those at The Bristal to help meet the needs of the residents and their families,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Congratulations to The Engel Burman Group on the opening of its fourth Bristal Assisted Living community in Suffolk County. On behalf of my colleagues in the Suffolk County Legislature, I wish you much success.”
“There is not a family on Long Island that has not been touched by the devastating impact of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Jan Burman, President of The Engel Burman Group. “Either your family has been affected directly, or has watched helplessly as close friends deal with the consequences that this illness is having on their loved ones.”
“Over the last 18 years, The Bristal name has defined high quality assisted living and has become synonymous with the best care available for our loved ones who no longer choose to live on their own or those who need a little extra help,” said Steven Krieger, a founding partner of The Engel Burman Group.
“Life at The Bristal affords our residents an opportunity to not only receive the compassionate care and attention that they need, but to remain close to their loving family and friends,” said Scott Burman, a partner in The Engel Burman Group. “For some families, it is necessary to bring aging parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents back to Long Island. But they know that due to the lives they lead, balancing their family obligations and their careers, that these loved ones will need an environment that can meet all of their needs. The Bristal meets – and exceeds – these needs. We provide a social environment, quality care and we are close enough for them to visit as often as they like.”
In opening The Bristal at Holtsville, Executive Director Melanie Boyd said, “We know Long Island, we understand the needs of our residents and the concerns of their families. Our staff has been carefully selected to provide the level of care that Long Islanders have come to expect from the Bristal. I am excited by the opportunity to help residents begin this new chapter of life, and confident that we will meet their expectations.”
The Bristal offers activities for residents based on their personal preferences, hobbies and interests. Programs include arts and crafts, book clubs, shopping trips and regularly scheduled cultural outings. The Bristal’s common areas include a cinema, library, billiards parlor and fitness center so residents can enjoy themselves right in the comfort of the community.
A Special Commitment to those facing Alzheimer’s
The Bristal houses a special neighborhood called Reflections, a comprehensive memory care program that specializes in dealing with older adults who are facing early to mid-stage Alzheimer’s disease and related cognitive disorders.
The Bristal is staffed with experienced professionals who are trained and equipped to enhance the quality of life for these special-needs residents and their families. It provides an environment that allows individuals to maintain their dignity while allowing families to be free of the enormously draining role of primary caregiver.
The Bristal at Holtsville has 106 assisted living suites, and 40 additional suites that are located in the Reflections neighborhood and dedicated to providing care for residents with Alzheimer’s and other memory impairments. Prices begin at $5,000 a month with Reflections units starting at $7,400 a month.
