Suburbanization on Long Island: The First Phase 1890-1940

While Long Island suburbanization is often considered a post-WWII development, this presentation explores earlier manifestations of the phenomenon, through the history of the creation of Brightwaters and Old Field South. Both communities were the brainchild of Thomas Benton Ackerson and Ward Melville, who intended them as planned communities. Richard Welch will talk about the careers of both men, and how the communities evolved during and after their oversight.
