Community Rallying For Bayport Woman Diagnosed With Leukemia

Joe DeSantis, a local teacher and Bayport firefighter, has started an online fundraiser for his wife.

On May 19, Bayport resident Rebecca DeSantis was diagnosed with leukemia.

It is the fourth cancer diagnosis for Rebecca in her 29-year life, with the first coming when she was 15.

Rebecca’s husband, Joe, a science teacher at Bayport-Blue Point’s James Wilson Young Middle School and a Bayport firefighter, has created an online fundraiser to help raise funds for Rebecca’s upcoming bone marrow transplant and the financial burden the couple expects with Rebecca being out of work for about a year.

“I truly love my community and know how the generosity and care flows through this small town,” Joe told Patch in an email.

The online fundraiser, which seeks to raise $50,000, has taken in more than $8,300 in just two days. Read more about Rebecca’s battle and learn how you can help on the fundraiser page here: https://life.indiegogo.com/fundraisers/becka-s-leukemia-battle
