Dowling College Board Won't Appeal Loss of Accreditation

The board of trustees announced Wednesday that efforts to save the 48-year-old school have failed.

Efforts to save Long Island's Dowling College from closure have failed and the school's board of trustees will not appeal a decision by the the Middle States Commission on Higher Education revoking the college's accreditation, the board announced Wednesday.

The board, in a letter to the college community, said a deal could not be reached with Global University Systems to keep the 48-year-old Oakdale school in operation.

The school was originally slated to close on June 3, in the midst of $54 million in debt and cratering enrollment, but Dowling alumni and the board had fought for the last month to find a way to save the college.
