The Sayville Young People’s Opera Workshop will celebrate its 17th season with “A Night at the Operas” the evenings of Thursday August 9 and Friday August 10 in the air-conditioned David M. Jones auditorium at the Sayville Middle School, 291 Johnson Avenue, Sayville, NY. These performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and there is no charge for admission.
Since 1995, SYPOW has been uniquely offering area young people the opportunity to experience, learn and perform opera and operetta. Past summer presentations have ranged from Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” to Menotti’s “The Medium” to Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado” to Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar”. This summer SYPOW is taking a slightly different approach by offering a revue of chorus numbers, ensembles, duets and arias from classical opera and operettas as well as modern ones. With over 30 young singers from Nassau and Suffolk counties ranging in age from 11 years to 26, this year’s offering includes “The Magic Flute”, “La Boheme”, “La Traviata”, “HMS Pinafore”, “Pirates of Penzance”, “The Mikado”, “Little Mary Sunshine”, “The New Moon”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “The Who’s Tommy”, “Miss Saigon”, and “Les Miserables”. These two performances are open to the public free of charge. For additional information, please email <sypow.opera@yahoo.com> or go to <sypow.tripod.com> on the internet.
