LEAP Classes Spearhead a Unique Project

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, the LEAP classes at Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District, along with their book buddies, peers and mentors, painted recycled puzzle pieces to create one-of–a-kind necklaces and key chains. The completed designs were sold during the school’s lunch periods to raise funds for Land and Sea, a local sports and recreation program. This Westhampton Beach company organizes activities ranging from basketball to surfing, and services not only children with autism, but also all children who have unique needs and abilities.Working with fellow Academy Street students, the LEAP classes worked to sell their creative products and practiced several of the classroom skills they were learning, including reciprocal conversation, social skills and handling money. As a result of the school’s fundraiser, more than $400 was raised for the worthy cause.
