Travels With Crassostrea Virginica: The Transatlantic, Transcontinental Eastern Oyster

The Long Island Maritime Museum invites you to an informative event with speaker Jeff Kassner to learn all there is to know about the Transcontinental Eastern Oyster on Saturday, February 13th at 12:30 PM.

During the 19th century, the eastern oyster was an important and much in demand food item. Jeff will reveal how the opening of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 and the routine crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by steamers gave rise to a booming oyster industry. The rise was based on the shipping of live oysters from the Atlantic east coast estuaries, from which they were harvested. to San Francisco and England.
