LI Driver Charged After 100+ MPH Crash Flips BMW: Police

The man was impaired by drugs and speeding before his BMW overturned in Bayport, ejecting him and his passenger, police said.

BAYPORT, NY — A Shirley man was arrested Monday after police said he was driving more than 100 mph immediately before an April crash on Sunrise Highway that ejected him and his passenger.

Mario Auer, 25, was arrested at the Fifth Precinct and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving and speeding, Suffolk County police said.

The crash happened April 28 at about 1:10 p.m. on eastbound Sunrise Highway in Bayport, just west of Nicolls Road, police said.

Auer was driving a 2022 BMW eastbound when he lost control, struck the center median and overturned, police said. Auer and his passenger, Caitlyn Rose Lovelock, 28, of Mastic Beach, were both ejected from the vehicle, police said.

An investigation determined Auer was driving more than 100 mph immediately before the crash, police said.

Auer was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after the crash, police said. Lovelock was taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk in Patchogue with minor injuries.

Auer is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at First District Court.
