Man With 40 License Suspensions Flees Traffic Stop: Cops

The man reportedly fled an officer at a Sayville traffic stop and was later arrested in Bayport, police say.

BAYPORT, NY — A Deer Park man was arrested and charged Thursday morning, after he reportedly fled an officer at a Sayville traffic stop, and for driving with 40 suspensions on his license, Suffolk County Police said.

Jemel Edwards, 35, was charged with third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer, operating a vehicle without an interlock device, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, as well as eight other New York State vehicle and traffic violations, police said.

According to police, Edwards was driving a 2000 Nissan Altima eastbound on Route 27 Service Road at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday, when he was pulled over at Broadway Avenue for speeding. As an officer got out of his patrol car, Edwards sped away, police said, heading southbound on Nicolls Road. The officer did not pursue in his vehicle, police said, but radioed the information to dispatch.

Shortly afterwards, officers responded to a 911 call regarding an incident on Terrace Road in Bayport. Officers arrived at the scene at 12:02 a.m., police said, and observed the Nissan parked nearby. They located Edwards and arrested him, police said.

Upon further investigation, officers discovered he had 40 suspensions on his driver’s license, police said.

The Nissan was impounded at the scene, police said, and Edwards will be arraigned at a later date.
