Suffolk Police Identity Man Killed On Sunrise Highway

Matthew Wenk, 20, of Islip Terrace was pronounced dead by a member of the Community Ambulance Company early Thursday, police said.

SAYVILLE, NY — A 20-year-old Islip Terrace man was struck by a Jeep and killed on Sunrise Highway in Sayville early Thursday morning, Suffolk County police said.

Police said that at about 2:35 a.m. Matthew Wenk was in the eastbound lane of travel on Sunrise Highway, just east of exit 49, when he was struck by a 2006 Jeep Liberty.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by a member of the Community Ambulance Company. The driver of the Jeep, Juan Abarca, 20, of Farmingville, was not injured, police said.

The Jeep was impounded for a standard safety check, police said. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the 5th Squad at 631-854-8552.
