Mary Lou Cohalan and the Suffolk County News

A new podcast episode from the Long Island History Project.

Women running the local paper was a new thing for Sayville back in the late 1960s but that didn't stop Mary Lou Cohalan and Joann O'Doherty from doing it. Along with their husbands and two other couples (the Retaliattas and the Harts) they bought the Suffolk County News and ran it until 1985.

You can hear Mary Lou describe what it was like in those early days - moving the paper off the old printing presses of yesteryear, gaining acceptance in the community, and dealing with disasters of all varieties.

All this on the latest episode of the Long Island History Project.
