So what can you do? Here are some great Pest Control Tips by Team Pest Control serving the Long Island New York Area.

What Is A Bed Bug and What Does It Look Like?

Bed bugs are parasitic insects of the cimicid family that feed exclusively on blood. A newly hatched bed bug is semi-transparent, light tan in appearance and color, and the size of a small seed. Adult bed bugs appear flat, have rusty red in color, oval bodies, and are the size of an apple seed. Bed bugs are easily confused with other household insects like carpet beetles, spider beetles and newly hatched cockroaches (nymphs).

Signs that bed bugs are in your home or business are red blood stains, black droppings and eggs which are found in several locations including:

Mattress seams and tufts, blankets, sheets, pillow cases, and in all types of furniture.

Crevices and cracks in furniture.

Drawers of furniture

Baseboards of walls

Many people do not react to bed bug bites. Bite marks can appear immediately or show day's later. Most bites occur at night while you are sleeping. Bites can appear as small bumps or large welts that itch. Bed bug bites may resemble mosquito and other insect bites, so many people do not realize they have bed bug bites.

Bed bugs are carried into homes and businesses by latching onto used furniture, luggage, purses, clothing, and/or attaching to connecting pipes and wiring.

Bed Bug Prevention Tips :

Never bring used bed frames, mattresses, box springs or furniture found on the street into your home.

Check all used furniture for bed bugs.

When traveling, check the bed and furniture. Keep suitcases and purses off the floor and bed, and inspect these items before you leave.

If you think you have been exposed to bed bugs, immediately wash and dry your clothing on very hot settings or store them in a sealed plastic bag until you can.

Seal cracks and crevices with caulk, to prevent bed bugs from hiding in these areas. This will help prevent bed bugs and other insects from coming in.

Be sure you know what bed bugs look like, they are sometimes confused with fleas or ticks or other insects

If your not sure take a picture of the bug and show to a professional pest control company

Reduce the number of hiding places in your home or business. Clean up the clutter and give them less places to hide

Use special bed bug covers (encasement) on your mattress and box springs which will help protect you from bed bugs when you sleep Leave the encasement on for a year.

Regularly wash and heat-dry your bed sheets, blankets, bedspreads, pillow cases and any clothing that touches the floor.

Vacuuming can get rid of some of your bed bugs but is not a long term solution. Vacuum rugs, floors, upholstered furniture, bed frames, under beds, around bed legs, and all cracks and crevices around the room.

Change the vacuum bag after each use so the bed bugs can’t escape. Place used vacuum bag in a tightly sealed plastic bag and throw away immediately in an outside garbage bin.

Tips For Inspecting For Bed Bugs:

Check long mattress seams, in the tufts and under the mattress tags

Behind the headboard and other areas in the bed frame

Inside the holes where screws go

Along wood creases in the box

Springs or in bed frames

Where the box springs fabric is

Fabric stapled to the wood frame

Behind loose wallpaper

Behind loose and chipped paint

Under and around the base of the air conditioner unit and inside the unit

Check the wood framing in your closets

Along the interior frame of closet doors and other doorways

Behind baseboards and cracks

Inside and outside the baseboard heaters

Inside curtain rods, check the entire curtain and focus near the top where they are pleated

Check all personal belongings, including books, stuffed animals, picture frames and hundreds of other places they may hide

These steps will help you to prevent bed bugs from spreading and realize you have a problem. The best solution is to turn to a pest control professional. Look to hire an experienced and responsible pest control professional who can increase your chance of success in getting rid of bed bugs.
