Police: Man Arrested After Sayville Home Break-In

The man fled the home when a resident returned and discovered him inside the house Thursday night, police say.

A Sayville woman came home Thursday night to find a burglar inside her home, but police say the thief is now behind bars.

According to police, 45-year-old Brian Cook, of Setauket, entered a home on Barnsley Lane and took jewelry and gift cards.

He fled when the female owner of the residence came home and discovered him in the house, police said.

The owner called 911 and gave a description of the suspect, police said.

A short time later, a local resident spotted a man who fit the description of someone who had recently burglarized a home in the area, and the man was able to detain the suspect until police arrived at about 8:30 p.m., police said.

Fifth Squad detectives arrested Cook and charged him with second degree burglary, third degree trespass and two counts of fifth degree criminal possession of stolen property.

The stolen items from the house were recovered, police said.

Cook faces the trespass charge because he entered a yard on Spruce Avenue in Sayville around 3:30 p.m on Thursday.

Cook was being held at the Fifth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.
