Sayville Middle School Welcomes Fifth Graders For Science Workshop

STEM & STARS Workshop Showcases Middle School Science Program

Sayville Middle School welcomed fifth graders from all three Sayville School District elementary schools for the middle school’s annual STEM & STARS workshop. Elementary students engaged in a three-part learning experience with middle school teachers as their first real introduction to the school’s science department.

When the students arrived, Mr. Loscalzo, a seventh-grade science teacher, led a classification workshop. In a lesson that paralleled the fifth-grade STEAM curriculum, students were challenged to identify traits on imaginary aliens to show how we group plants and animals into kingdoms, phyla, and classes on Earth. Then, technology teacher Mr. Goodman tapped into the students’ STEAM knowledge to help them build rockets and launchers, demonstrating how the parts of a rocket affect its flight path and momentum. Finally, the students were brought into the Sayville Middle School planetarium by biology and astronomy teacher Mr. Daleo, who showed them how to locate constellations and planets in the night sky.

“It is an incredible opportunity to open our doors to elementary students to show them what is in store for them next year at Sayville Middle School,” said Sayville Middle School Principal Dr. Joseph Castoro. “They now have an idea of the unique experiences they can expect in their new school—including a planetarium, right here in the building.”
