Sayville Schools Host First Family Fit Night

The Sayville Union Free School District recently hosted its first Family Fit Night as part of the Sayville STRIDES (Self-Esteem, Trust, Resilience, Independence, Diversity, Empathy, Strength) monthly Family Connect Nights, which are geared toward promoting wellness and family time. The District partnered with the Oakdale gym GEM Fitness and the nonprofit Fit For Life to provide a safe, competitive, and engaging environment in which participants could take part in fitness activities.

The event featured fitness challenges and activities led by GEM Fitness trainers, including yoga, tug-of-war, hockey shootout, obstacle course, and more. Local vendors—including Redefine Meals, Healthfirst, and GiGi’s Playhouse—also participated, providing free samples, water, reading materials, and merchandise. The night was staffed by volunteer High School Anchor Club students, who sold healthy snacks and encouraged younger students throughout the event.

Family Fit Night was the latest installment in the District’s monthly Family Connect Nights, days in which students are not assigned homework. Instead, the District encourages that students spend the evenings enjoying quality time with their families and build meaningful connections with their loved ones.

"In the Sayville School District, we believe it is essential to foster happy and healthy relationships for our students and their families," said Sayville School District Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services Jillian Makris. "Family Connect Nights are one of the ways we, as educators, can help students understand that home and family life are paramount to focus on. Additionally, partnering with GEM Fitness nicely aligns with one of our district wellness goals where we stress that good physical health leads to good mental health."
