Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Suffolk County

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Suffolk County. The watch is in effect until 8 p.m. Monday.

Sunshine will give way to increasing clouds this afternoon and thunderstorms will approach and move through from northwest to southwest.

A severe thunderstorm watch is issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. A severe thunderstorm by definition is a thunderstorm that produces one inch hail or larger in diameter and/or winds equal or exceed 58 miles an hour. During the watch, people should review severe thunderstorm safety rules and be prepared to move a place of safety if threatening weather approaches.

A heat advisory also remains in effect until 8 p.m. for Nassau and western Suffolk.

Tonight- Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before midnight. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 74. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday- Sunny, with a high near 93. West wind 6 to 13 mph.
