Students study different cultures and learn about the traditions of telling stories to pass down information.

After studying different cultures and learning about the traditions of telling stories to pass down information, fourth-graders at Blue Point Elementary represented their classroom community by sewing a quilt.

Each student created a symbol on a quilt square that signified something they value about themselves and that they bring to the classroom community. Students drew an array of symbols and described many contributions such as teamwork, compassion, friendship and creativity. They then worked in pairs to sew the quilt squares together, symbolizing how all of the qualities that unite them.
