Supporting St. Baldrick's in Bayport-Blue Point

Schools host events to raise money to fight cancer.

The cafeteria at James Wilson Young Middle School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District was standing room only as the National Junior Honor Society recently held their fourth annual St. Baldrick’s to honor two current students – Marco Daidone, who is in remission from osteosarcoma and Casey McLehose, who is cancer free from acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Many students, residents and staff members volunteered to shed their locks during the event as they collectively raised more than $19,000 to benefit childhood cancer research. NJHS members were on hand during the event to boost the fundraising efforts of shavees by selling commemorative t-shirts and tasty treats to those attending.

Academy Street Elementary School teamed up with the middle school this year and hosted their own spirited event to support second-grader Lane Romano, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments for cancer. Making good on his promise to shave his head if the school met their fundraising goal, school psychologist Dr. Saylor shed his locks before the student body during a daytime assembly. Academy raised over $2,300 as a result of this effort.
