Hour-by-Hour Winter Weather Forecast For Long Island

The latest on how much snow we can expect and when it's coming.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Long Island with a minor winter storm looming (find the hour-by-hour forecast below).

A total of 1-2 inches of snow is expected across the island late Friday night and Saturday morning. Those estimates are down a hair from earlier forecasts when 1-3 inches was predicted. A trace of ice accumulation is also possible. The NWS says there will be hazardous driving conditions on untreated roads.

The winter weather advisory will be in effect from midnight to 10 a.m. Saturday. There's about a 55 percent of more than an inch of snow on Long Island, and about a 20 percent chance of more than 2 inches, according to the latest NWS snowfall maps.

Temperatures will increase overnight from near 23 degrees at 11 p.m. to about 32 degrees at 7 a.m. There should be a quick transition to rain Saturday morning, but with such cold temperatures in place, the surface will take a bit longer to warm and a period of light freezing rain is possible, even at the coast, the NWS says in a forecast discussion Friday morning.

Any snow that does fall won't be around long. After a few days of frigid temperatures, the high on Saturday will be near 47 and it could reach 56 degrees by noon on Sunday. The arctic cold returns Sunday night, though, with a low near 23.
