Boys Lacrosse Defeats Sleepy Hollow

The Raiders beat the Headless Horsemen 13 to 5.

It's a school Scarsdale probably hasn't seen too much of in any sport. But on Tuesday the boys' lacrosse team welcomed the visiting Sleepy Hollow players to their town.

It's not that these two schools aren't close to one another. Only about 10 miles separate the two towns. But this season, in order to save money, Section 1 realigned the leagues based on geographic settings and not by past success.

So yesterday, the Scarsdale lacrosse team continued its strong start to the season as the Raiders, who are a Class AA team defeated Sleepy Hollow of Class C 13-5.

The Raiders improved their record to 6-3, while Sleepy Hollow fell to 4-5.

It took a while for the Headless Horsemen to find their offense, and by the time they did the game was well out of reach. Scarsdale jumped out to an early 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and added three more goals before halftime.

Sleepy Hollow had no answer for the Raiders' top scorer – Matt Oliverio – who finished the game with three goals and two assists. The senior has been hot and cold for much of the season, but over the last few games, he has been tough to stop – for any team.

Oliverio has scored 14 goals so far this season, but after scoring four in the team's opening contest against Bronxville, Oliverio went scoreless over the next two games, Scarsdale went 1-1 during that stretch. Over the last four games, Oliverio has been on a tear, including yesterday's game as he has 10 goals and five assists over that span.

Adding to the Raiders' offense has been Brian Bauersfeld. He was the second leading scorer in yesterday's game tallying four points (two goals). Earlier in the year, the junior had a stretch that saw him score 11 goals over a three game period.

As for Sleepy Hollow, it wasn't until the fourth quarter when the Headless Horsemen began to find their offense. Dennis Maloy led the way as the junior finished the game with three goals and one assist. It's the second time this season Maloy tallied a hat trick.

Unfortunately for Sleepy Hollow, the Horsemen dug themselves too big a hole to climb out of while Scarsdale continues to roll as the team has now won four of its last five games.
