Daily Sports Digest: Scarsdale Hockey Takes on Pawling Tonight

The Top Spot:

Scarsdale comes into tonight’s match up against Pawling as a slim favorite as the Raiders are ranked eighth and the Tigers are seeded ninth.

The Raiders come in at 12-8-0 with a 3-3 record within their own league, and the team ranks fourth in WRPDIIHL Conference II in goals scored and second in goals allowed.

Pawling and Scarsdale have not played each other this season but the Raiders are coming in hot as they are 6-1 in their last seven games.

Scarsdale’s Hunter Jurman currently ranks among the league leaders with 40 points, 20 assists and 20 goals and goaltenders Conner Wolfe and Ian Marinelli are both among the best in the league in several statistical categories.

Pawling’s best scorer is Conner Grogan who has 35 points on the season with 16 goals.

Tonight’s game is at the Ice Hutch at 6 p.m.

Highlights: Sam Broemer, Hunter Jurman, Travis Misarti, Sam Blakley, and Chris Katchis each scored in the game for Scarsdale. Rob Burns and Jake Bank had two assists each in the win and Conner Wolfe had 20 saves. Brett Enax and Tommy Farrell both scored for Sleepy Hollow/Irvington in the loss.

College Sports Notebook:

Lady Chargers upended

The Dominican College women’s basketball team finishes the regular season at home Tuesday evening when Felician (NJ) College visits the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest. The Lady Chargers (12-13 overall, 11-7 CACC) are coming of a 77-62 loss at home to Holy Family University, which improved to 20-7 and 16-2 in the conference.

KC Jentzen of Pearl River came off the bench for Dominican, scoring 10 points and pulling down seven rebounds, while Bianca Harris of Teaneck, NJ, had 11 points and Lindsey Lopez of Elmwood Park, NJ, a team-high six assists.

Tuesday night’s game on Coach Baxter Court is set for 6 p.m. against the 17-8 Golden Falcons.

Meanwhile, the men’s team also closes out the regular season on Tuesday night, hosting Felician College at 8 p.m., following the women’s game.

 The Chargers of veteran coach Joe Clinton of Pearl River rallied from a 20-7 first-half deficit to beat Holy Family University, 72-61, elevating their overall mark to 17-8 and 10-7 in the CACC.

Guard Leon Porter of Laurel, MD, led all scorers with 21 points and a game-leading seven assists, while Cory Quimby of Otisville had the game’s only double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Sophomore Khaleev Ginyard of Brentwood added 12 points in the win.

Bearcats continue to growl

Sophomore Sean Kilpatrick of White Plains had seven points, four rebounds and three assists as the University of Cincinnati basketball team never trailed in a 62-57 Big East victory over Seton Hall before a near-sellout crowd of 13,003 at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati.

Dion Dixon of Chicago led the Bearcats with 20 points, helping Cincinnati (19-8-95) win its third game in the last four going into a conference matchup at home on Thursday with No. 19 Louisville.

Fuquan Edwin of Paterson, NJ, and Jordan Theodore of Englewood, NJ, each scored 15 points for the streaky Pirates (18-9, 7-8), who had won three straight after a six-game losing streak. They are scheduled to face 10th-ranked Georgetown (20-5) at home on Tuesday.

Going out in style

Playing in their final game at Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, four Manhattan College seniors combined for 53 points, 21 rebounds and 13 assists, as the Jaspers (15-13, 9-7 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) knocked off Saint Peter’s, 72-59.  

On the day she became Manhattan’s all-time leader in blocked shots, Nadia Peters of the Bronx notched a career-high 18 points and added eight rebounds.

Rounding out the senior quartet are Lindsey Loutsenhizer of North Huntington, PA, Schyanne Halfkenny of Hyde Park, MA, and Alyssa Herrington of Cambridge.

Junior Maggie Blair of Briarcliff contributed four assists and three steals in 19 minutes off the bench as the Jaspers moved into a tie for third place in the MAAC with two games remaining in the regular season.       

The Jaspers own the tiebreaker over the Greyhounds and control their own destiny entering the final weekend.

Manhattan ends the regular season with a pair of matchups in Buffalo this weekend.  

The Jaspers visit Canisius (12-15, 6-10 MAAC) at 7 p.m. on Friday, and then meet Niagara (10-18, 7-9 MAAC) on Sunday at 2 p.m.  If they win both contests, the Jaspers will clinch the No. 3 seed in the MAAC Tournament.

Jeremy Lin has completely taken the world by storm and flipped the NBA upside down. He has inspired music videos and a countless number of “Linisms” and the thought of him moving to White Plains has everyone in Westchester calling him their neighbor. This Friday the league will honor their very best in Orlando as the league takes a break from competition and has some fun with the annual All-Star weekend.

“If basketball careers lasted two weeks then Jeremy Lin is a first ballot hall of famer,” said Wipeout co-host and life long Knick fan John Henson last week on Mike and Mike in the Morning.

Earlier last week NBA Commissioner David Stern refused to add Lin to the All Star Game roster or allow him to play in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge, but did say he could be included in one of the All-Star Saturday night competitions such as the Haier Shooting Stars, Taco Bell Skills Challenge, Foot Locker Three Point Contest or Sprite Slam Dunk.

Needless to say after the outcry from the public and the media Stern and the NBA made the smart move to include Linsanity to the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge, he will also be competing for New York in the Haier Shooting Stars and he will assist teammate Iman Shumpert in the Sprite Slam Dunk. Not only was Lin included in this year’s Rising Stars game but in the new format General Manager Shaquille O’Neal made him the third overall pick of the contest behind Blake Griffin and Kyrie Irving.

Now as a graduate of one of the top business schools in the country I fully understand the marketability of Lincluding the Linsteria to the weekend, but as a life long basketball fan I have to ask the question, should someone who has only played in 17 of his teams 31 games really be honored at All Star Weekend?
