Scarsdale Daily Sports Digest: Trio of Local Wrestlers Take Home Titles

The Top Spot:
Wrestling dominated the local sports landscape over the weekend as the best athletes across the Hudson Valley took part in the Sectional Championships.
The two day tournament started off on Saturday with Division 1 competing at and Division 2 taking place at Croton-Harmon.

On Sunday, matches for both Divisions 1 and 2, and several young local athletes competed for the individual championships. As for the team results, Fox Lane narrowly defeated North Rockland for the top spot 172-168.5 in Division 1. Nanuet creamed the opposition in Division 2 scoring 277 points, and Edgemont came in second with 236.
Scarsdale competed in Division 1, and 10 Raiders made the trip to the Sectional tournament.

Senior John Tambunting (132) came into the tournament as the third seed and ended up falling in the finals to Fox Lane’s Dan Ventura in 1:24. Jack Braun (170) also fell in the finals to Yorktown’s fifth seeded Steven Sabella 4-2 in overtime.
Top seeded Jacob Berkowitz (182) had the best day of anyone from Scarsdale, as he came away a tournament champion. In the finals, Berkowitz beat Yorktown junior Thomas Murray 7-2 for the title.
Edgemont had 17 wrestlers competing in the Sectional Tournament’s Division 2, as a team the Panthers finished in second to Nanuet, but two of Edgemont’s best brought home individual titles.
Tyler Aslanian (99) got the day started off right for the Panthers, as he beat Nanuet’s Joe Dillon 6-4 for the title.
In the 113 weight class, Edgemont had the top two seeds. Therefore, it was no surprise when top seeded John Aslanian and teammate Skyler Korek faced off for the championship. Aslanian pinned Korek in 42 seconds for the top spot.

Game: Mamaroneck vs. Scarsdale
Score: Mamaroneck won 57-48
Highlights: Matt Mezansky led all scorers with 24 points, and Alex Lanni tacked on 13 for Mamaroneck. Greg Scacchi led Scarsdale with 17 points in the loss.
Sport: Girls' Basketball (Friday)
Game: Mamaroneck vs. Scarsdale
Score: Scarsdale won 48-33
Highlights: Scarsdale’s Shelby Zucker led all scorers with 19, and Casey Pearlman wasn’t far behind with 18 points in the win. Maggie Sullivan led Mamaroneck with 12 points in the loss.

The Section 1 boys' and girls' basketball committees will meet to put together the playoff pairings at 9 a.m. today.
College Sports Notebook:
Dominican sweeps Nyack on hardwood
KC Jentzen of Pearl River, LaShonda Hathorne of Queens and Marley Klunk of York, Penn., leading the women’s team and Leon Porter of Laurel, Md., sparking the men’s team, helped Dominican College sweep a doubleheader against rival Nyack College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contests on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg.
Jentzen and scored 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Hathorne scored 13 points as the Lady Chargers defeated their counterparts from Nyack, 72-49, lifting their record to 11-10 overall and 10-4 in the CACC.
Klunk, who scored 10 points, had eight rebounds to share game-high honors with Nyack College’s Camille Nwosu of Centreville, Va.
The Dominican men’s team, which struggled against Nyack in a previous engagement before winning by three points, stamped their victory in 102-77 fashion behind Porter’s 26 points and five assists.
The win elevated the Chargers’ record to 14-7 and 7-6 in conference play, while Nyack remained winless including 0-13 in the conference.
Preston Smith of Mays Landing, N.J, had a team-high seven assists.
Bonnies clinch first-round bye
Junior Alaina Walker of Pomona pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, and spearheaded another strong defensive effort as the St. Bonaventure University women’s basketball team overcame a 15-point deficit to defeat the University of Dayton, 56-55, in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at Dayton, OH.
Walker, a graduate of Albertus Magnus, added four points and an assist in the winning effort.
Senior Megan Van Tatenhove of Sheboygan Falls, Wisc., scored a game-high 17 points for the Bonnies (16-6, 8-2 A-10), who grabbed a stranglehold of the conference at 11-0 while extending a program-best 13-game winning streak that lifted its overall mark to a glittering 24-2.
The victory also clinched a first-round bye (top four teams) at the A-10 Championship next month.
The game was a match up of the league's best offense (Dayton, 72.2 points per game) and second-best defense (St. Bonaventure, 54.3 points per game) – a battle in which the Bonnies won by holding Dayton to its lowest scoring output in its 10 A-10 games.
St. Bonaventure returns home to the Reilly Center to face Xavier on Saturday (Feb. 18) as part of Homecoming Weekend. The game, which will be broadcast nationally by CBS Sports Network, is is the first game of a doubleheader with the men’s team. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. from Bob Lanier Court.
