Accused Drunk Driver Collides with Police Car on Bronx River Parkway

New Rochelle man charged with DWI and vehicular assault after wrong-way crash into a Westchester County police car in Scarsdale.

Westchester County police officer Gerald Cole was taken by ambulance to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla yesterday morning to be treated for a broken wrist and other injuries after an accused drunk driver headed the wrong way on the Bronx River Parkway in Scarsdale crashed nearly head-on into Cole's police car.

Nelson Escobar, 46, of New Rochelle was also transported to the hospital for minor injuries, where he was charged with second-degree vehicular assault, a felony, and DWI, a misdemeanor.

According to police, Cole was driving northbound on the Bronx River parkway at 4 a.m. yesterday morning when Escobar's speeding vehicle struck his front passenger side.

Both Cole and Escobar were released from Westchester Medical Center yesterday. Escobar is scheduled to appear in Scarsdale Village Court on July 27, when he faces criminal charges, along with summonses for speeding, driving the wrong way and failure to obey a traffic control device.
