Life Below Stairs in England: Four Centuries of Servants' Tales

Lorella Brocklesby, cultural historian at New York University and British gem at the Scarsdale Adult School, will delve into the servants’ quarters of the stately homes of England. Devotees of PBS’s “Downton Abbey” or the movie “Gosford Park” will learn more about the lives of the housekeeper, nanny, cook, lady’s maid, and butler (the upper servants) as well as those of the footmen and lowly maids. Brocklesby will illustrate and explain the hierarchy, tradition, and rules of etiquette enforced in Tudor mansions, Georgian estates, Victorian homes and 1930s households. Materials are prepared in advance of the first class, so please register early at www.ScarsdaleAdultSchool.org.
