WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — Westchester County police say that what would have been a speeding ticket became six serious criminal charges when the driver decided to make a run for it, creating chaos in the process.

An officer saw a Nissan Altima traveling at high speeds on the northbound Bronx River Parkway at Oak Street in Mount Vernon. The officer caught up to the speeding vehicle a little further north in Yonkers and activated his lights and siren to make a traffic stop, according to authorities.

The driver of the Nissan would not pull over and continued driving at high speeds, according to p0lice. At Scarsdale Road, he ran a red light, entered the southbound parkway and continued to flee.

Near Tuckahoe Road, the Nissan struck another vehicle. The officer then terminated his pursuit to check on the driver of the other car, who was not injured.

Other WCPD officers re-engaged with the Nissan on the parkway at Yonkers Avenue.

Once again, the driver would not pull over, according to police. Officers boxed the Nissan in at a construction zone near the Bronx-Westchester border. Police say the driver rammed one of the patrol cars and then drove off again, striking the arm of one of the officers who had to jump out of the way.

At Gun Hill Road, the driver bailed out of the Nissan and ran in the direction of Webster Avenue. NYPD responded and members of both departments searched for the suspect, who was eventually taken into custody by NYPD inside a building on Webster Avenue and turned over to the WCPD.

A 22-year-old Queens resident was booked at Westchester County police headquarters in Hawthorne on charges of felony reckless endangerment, felony assault and felony criminal mischief. He was also charged with fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

He was arraigned in Yonkers City Court and was turned back over to the NYPD.
