Take the Next Step in Hoff-Barthelson’s Youth Orchestra Program

Hoff-Barthelson’s progressive Youth Orchestra Program provides an inspiring path through which students can refine their technique, broaden their musical perspectives, develop ensemble awareness, and experience the excitement of orchestral performance.

The Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Robert Schwartz, is an intermediate ensemble serving students in grades 6–10. It helps developing musicians strengthen their technical proficiency, musical expression, and ability to perform as part of a cohesive ensemble.

The Festival Orchestra, conducted by Leandro Gazineo, is Hoff-Barthelson’s advanced, symphonic orchestra for high school musicians. Students explore demanding repertoire through intensive rehearsals and performances designed to advance their artistry and orchestral musicianship.

“Our orchestras give young musicians a place to pursue excellence while learning what it means to contribute to something larger than themselves,” said Leandro Gazineo, Hoff-Barthelson’s Director of Orchestral Programs. “Through focused rehearsals and ambitious performances, students develop discipline, confidence, and a deeper understanding of the music. Just as importantly, they experience the excitement and sense of community that come from building an orchestra together.”

Students auditioning for the Chamber Orchestra or Festival Orchestra should submit videos featuring two excerpts from works of their choice, approximately two minutes each, that demonstrate their technical and musical abilities. Festival Orchestra candidates are encouraged to include at least one selection at or near NYSSMA Level 6. Additional scale or technical requirements vary by instrument.

New students must complete the Youth Orchestra Program Audition Form before submitting their videos. Returning students may submit their audition videos without completing the form. Complete audition requirements, the application form, and video submission instructions are available at:

Discover the Art of Collaboration Through Chamber Music

Hoff-Barthelson’s Pre-College Chamber Music Program allows intermediate and advanced instrumentalists, pianists, and vocalists to refine their artistry, develop essential ensemble skills, and experience the rewards of collaborative performance.

Participants receive 28 coaching sessions with expert faculty, frequent opportunities to perform, and the support of a community that values dedication, collaboration, and artistic growth. Students are placed in ensembles according to their age, ability, instrumentation, and availability.

“Chamber music challenges students to listen closely, communicate through their playing, and bring their own musical ideas to a shared interpretation,” said Laura Giannini, Director of the Chamber Music Program. “As students learn to collaborate with their peers, they become more confident, thoughtful, and expressive musicians. It is tremendously rewarding to see the musical and personal connections that develop within each ensemble.”

Placement auditions include a brief performance before a faculty panel. Students should prepare a solo selection of up to five minutes that best demonstrates their ability. Students performing at approximately NYSSMA Levels 4–6 should prepare two contrasting pieces or movements. Performances will be unaccompanied; no scales are required, and students will be asked to sight-read.
