Memorial Service for Scarsdale Doctor Today
The memorial service honoring Mona Shimshi Greenberg, a respected and loved community member and endocrinologist, will be held in Mount Vernon this morning.
The funeral for Mona Shimshi Greenberg, the longtime Scarsdale resident and endocrinologist who went missing on Sunday, which will be held today at 10 a.m. in Mount Vernon.
Shimshi Greenberg, 55, who police reported had battled depresssion, was found in Eastchester River near Pelham Bay Park in the northeast Bronx Thursday morning. Police reported no initial signs of trauma related to her death. The medical examiner, as of 7:15 last night, had not returned calls seeking the official determination on the cause of death.
Last night the family accepted visitors in their home at 51 Carthage Ave., and members of their Jewish congregation, Young Israel, arrived with large bins and folding chairs, possibly for shiva preparations.

Nobody from the family or congregation was willing to speak earlier yesterday, but already members of the local community have begun responding to the beloved doctor's sudden death in press interviews and also here, in the comment section on Scarsdale Patch. Notice was sent out to Solomon Schecter families and alumni this morning at 9:25 a.m. by the school's director of communications, Shelia Yossem, about the memorial service.

Yossem was unable to be reached at her office by the time of the publication of this article, but offered these heartfelt words in the mass e-mail:
"We are deeply saddened by the death of Mona Shimshi Greenberg, mother of Jacob (Class 2006) and Deena (Middle School 2000), wife of Mark Greenberg..."
"...May the Greenberg family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem."
The family will thereafter accept visitors at their home at 51 Carthage Ave. for shiva.
Shiva is the period of mourning during which Jewish families retreat to their home and do not leave, but will accept visitors and family. For many families the period lasts a week, but it can extend for a longer period of time.
