Scarsdale Considering New Leaf Collection Policy

Leaf collection in the village started on Oct. 14, and officials said last year the process cost about $800,000.

Looking to follow in the footsteps of communities like New Rochelle, Scarsdale is considering adopting new leaf collection policies, and officials are reaching out to residents for input.

The village has posted a survey on its website to gauge public interest in mulch mowing leaves and other concerns.

Leaf collection in the village started on Oct. 14, but officials said last year the process cost about $800,000, which is prompting the consideration of new policies, such as eliminating loose leaf collection and encouraging residents to mulch their leaves.

“Starting in 2015, the modified program would still allow for curbside collection by the Village but would require leaves placed at the curb to be in biodegradable paper bags,” officials wrote in a statement on the survey. “Leaves collected on residential properties could also be brought directly to the Village’s Leaf Transfer Station at no charge or to an alternate location outside of Scarsdale. Residents also have the option of mulching leaves on their property, thereby eliminating the need to bag or haul them elsewhere.”
