Scarsdale Fire Department's Charity Carnival Big Success

The Scarsdale Fire Department hosted its for the Ronald McDonald House New York.

Thursday's carnival raised $14,000 for the organization, which provides a home away from home for pediatric cancer patients and their families while they receive treatment. In addition, the SFD invited members of the Wounded Warriors Project, an organization that works to honor and empower wounded warriors and provide them with programs and services. 

The carnival had many activities for the children to enjoy, like a giant slide, a fun house, a bungee bounce, carnival games and face paint, but they all pale in comparison to the day’s main events.

First, there was a demonstration by the police department in which they "apprehended" an assailant in a vehicle with a police dog. Then a U.S. Army helicopter landed in Crossway Field and the kids were allowed to explore. 

The biggest surprise of the day was a parachute team of three that dropped out of a plane and landed on the field in front of the crowd, carrying banners for the Ronald McDonald House and for the Scarsdale Fire Department. 

There was supposed to be sky writing as well, but it had to be cancelled due to the cloud cover that day.  

The event, created by firefighter John Savarese, was attended by approximately 250 people, including participants of both organizations and members of the Scarsdale community.

So far, Savarese says that he has raised about $14,000 of their $20,000 goal for charity, but he is still accepting donations at the moment.
