Scarsdale Man To Be Honored At Senior Hall Of Fame Awards

He was nominated for his 35 years of service as a volunteer and officer of the United Hebrew of New Rochelle board of directors.

SCARSDALE, NY — On Dec. 7, Scarsdale resident Malcolm Lazarus will be inducted with Special Recognition into the Westchester County Senior Hall of Fame at the 36th Annual Senior Citizen Hall of Fame Awards Luncheon at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown. The event is hosted by County Executive George Latimer, the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services, and the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services.

Nominated for his 35 years of service as a volunteer and officer of the United Hebrew of New Rochelle board of directors, Lazarus, 86, has been instrumental in shaping United Hebrew into the organization that it is today, according to Rita Mabli, United Hebrew’s president & CEO.

“Mr. Lazarus has extraordinary vision, and his leadership has helped United Hebrew to develop an outstanding campus of comprehensive quality care for seniors across the region,” she says. With his support, United Hebrew has been transformed from its modest beginnings as a home for the aged to a full continuum of care offering a broad array of services including long-term skilled nursing, short-term rehab, assisted living, memory care, senior housing, and home health care. United Hebrew is now a one-of-a-kind facility where 800 staff members serve nearly 1,000 residents and clients daily. The United Hebrew campus is situated on seven acres, overlooking Long Island Sound.

“In addition to Mr. Lazarus’ leadership role, one his most innovative contributions has been his endowment of The Lazarus Art Gallery, an integral part of life on our campus and in our community,” Mabli said. Designed to spark the imagination, lift the spirit, and nurture a lifelong love of learning, The Lazarus Gallery presents several exhibitions a year, featuring a rich array of art created in a variety of media: watercolor, ceramics, mixed media, sculpture, encaustic, jewelry, fiber art, photography, and more.

Lazarus has served as president of United Hebrew five times from 1993 to 2007; he has also served as chair and senior chair of the board. He has chaired the organization’s fundraising since 1998 and served as chair of the UGC Foundation since its formation in 2000. He also served as a founding member of United Hebrew’s Strategic Planning Committee. He remains actively involved in the foundation and the campus today.
