Scarsdale Police Blotter: Gas Leaks, Suspicious Strangers and Phantom Phone Calls
This week in Scarsdale, a gas leak prompted police to perform a well-intentioned home break-in, a disconnected phone number dialed 911 and suspicious strangers roamed Village streets, stores and residences alike.

1:01 p.m. – A car accident involving a Scarsdale female and a male Yonkers resident was reported on 307 Mamaroneck Rd. Neither involved parties were injured.
1:21 p.m. – A woman called the police after sighting suspicious activity near her home on River Road. Following the phone call, a white male was reportedly seen running into the woods. Police checked the area, but did not find any evidence of trespassers. A four-door Sedan has been indentified as possibly belonging to the suspected intruder.
2:23 p.m. – The Scarsdale Fire Department requested the police help them gain entry to a residence with a gas leak under the front lawn. Technicians from Con-Edison were already on-scene working to stop the leak. The patrol secured the home's doors upon departure and notified the homeowner.
5:53 p.m. – A female employee at Space NK, a luxury beauty retailer on 24 Harwood Court, called the police after sighting a strange male lingering in front of the shop's window before walking into the store. The man – described as a white, balding male in his forties, clad in a black leather jacket, black boots and jeans – reportedly responded to the employee's inquiry if he needed help by saying "I'm not as good as you, but I'll try." A male employee appeared, which prompted the strange customer to exit the store and walk towards Spencer Place. The employee who called the police said that the strange man appeared to be in a state of intoxication. Police combed the area and found no suspicious activity, but continued to monitor the area.
2:36 p.m. – A burglar alarm was falsely set off at a Chase Bank on 20 Palmer Ave. An olive green bag was seen on a countertop in the teller's area, but all bank doors were secure and no intruders were found. All was in order upon departure.
Thursday, Nov. 4
10:43 a.m. – An automatic garage door on Butler Road was reported as being set off by an unknown man without the code. The man was found by police to be the house's contractor, who had set off the door in error.
3:37 p.m. – A Tisdale Road resident reported suspicious-looking individuals in vehicles. Police arrived on scene and did not observe any abnormal activity.
9:53 p.m. – The police received a hang-up call from a 911 caller due to line trouble. Police arrived at the call's location, and were greeted by a homeowner. The homeowner claimed that she had not called 911, and that the number the police had received the call from was an old phone number of hers that had since been disconnected. Police advised the women to call the phone company the following day.
