MOPCO:The Mopco Improv Theatre

Six Sundays | 2-4 PM
November 1, 8, 15, 22 | December 6, 13.
Continue the journey. Work with your partner to find the game. Find the characters, relationships, and stories that make great improvised scenes happen. Get out of your head and into the where!
Each Fundamentals class wraps up with a fun and supportive 20-25 minute Showcase performance, held just before a main Mopco show. The showcase is a fantastic way to put your new improv skills into action in front of a welcoming audience. And who’s in that audience? Mopco members are usually there, but the rest is up to you! Invite your family, your friends—even your accountant! The showcase is free, and as a bonus, you get to attend the 8 PM Mopco show for free. Plus, your guests can enjoy the 8 PM show at half price. Now that’s a deal worth celebrating!
Prerequisite: Fundamentals 1 or equivalent (talk to instructor)

Actors: did you know that four essential tenets of improv can transform your work?

It goes without saying that improv also helps you deal with those on-stage moments when things go wrong. (Not if they go wrong: when!) but improv knowledge does much more.

You may have seen someone build a performance with care: they perfectly deliver the moves, cadence of lines, and character portrayal the play and director require. Yet without an improviser’s frame of mind, they may end up with a performance that is good, but not great, correct, but not fully alive. Improv skill helps you bring your characters to full, vibrant life.

Rather than chess pieces to be moved around a board or shallow hams who seek only their own glory, improvisation-informed actors are active collaborators who make a director’s job easier. They are more flexible, fun to work with, and creative, and become valued collaborators instead of terrified amateurs the director has to “handle.”

Come prepared to have fun while you learn new skills that will make you the kind of actor people love to play with!

A good improviser who wants to be a great improviser needs to master some of the traditional skills of scripted theatre. Increase your awareness and skills to:

Sharpen audience focus

Great actors make sure every moment of the performance is focused, polished, and effective. How do you do this instantly while you and your partner make stuff up?

Build deeper, more relatable relationships on stage.

Develop heightened awareness of endowments, and learn to yes, and given circumstances to flesh out your characters and relationships.

Develop your stage technique

Projection, enunciation, and physical presence hugely affect your on-stage work.

Play with emotional reality

Good scenes can be ruined by the improviser’s need to “find the funny.” Great actors, on the other hand, relish the chance to access real emotion. There’s nothing wrong with being funny, but audience “comedy fatigue” is a real thing!

Prerequisite: Completion of both Fundamentals classes or the equivalent. Talk to the instructor if you aren’t sure you qualify.
