DWI Charge For Motorcyclist After Sunrise Highway Crash: Police
The rider rear-ended a Nissan just after 3 p.m. and was airlifted with "non-life-threatening injuries," Suffolk police said.
SHIRLEY, NY — A West Babylon man was charged with driving while intoxicated after he was involved in a crash on his motorcycle in Shirley on Monday, Suffolk police said.
John Hertel, 56, was riding a 2008 Harley-Davidson motorcycle eastbound on Sunrise Highway, near William Floyd Parkway, when it rear-ended a Nissan Altima just after 3 p.m., police said. Hetzel was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was treated for “non-life-threatening injuries,” police said.
A man driving the Nissan was not injured in the crash, said police, adding that Hertel will be arraigned “at a later date.”

Eastbound Sunrise Highway was closed for nearly three hours until about 6 p.m., police said.
Police had been notified of the crash by a 911 call that came in at around 3 p.m.
