SHIRLEY, NY — Home Depot and Brookhaven Town worked together to help local veterans give the kitchen of their American Legion Hall a makeover.

Suffolk County Legislator Rudy Sunderman met with members of the American Legion Arthur H. Clune Post 1533 of Mastic Beach recently as they accepted a donation of building materials from the Home Depot in Shirley.

According to Sunderman, American Legion Commander Rick Rossi reached out to him in the fall 2019 asking for assistance in renovating the kitchen at the organization’s dining hall in Mastic Beach, to bring it up to code.

Sunderman said he explored multiple options to assist — the kitchen, he said, is the heart of the American Legion Hall, as a large portion of their revenue comes from renting out the space.

Sunderman kicked off a letter writing campaign to Home Depot, asking to have all supplies for the construction of the kitchen donated; he also visited the store to speak to managers.

With the assistance help of Home Depot's regional manager Christopher Holter, Sunderman secured the necessary supplies.

“I would like to thank Regional Manager Christopher Holter and all the employees of Home Depot for supporting our veterans and their generosity,” Sunderman said. “This donation will help to offset the cost so that funds raised can be used to continue the American Legion’s support of local veterans.”
