Inmate Assaults Correction Sergeant At Jail: Sheriff

The inmate bit down on the correction sergeant's finger after becoming agitated and verbally abusive toward staff, sheriff says.

SHIRLEY, NY — A correction sergeant was assaulted by an inmate at the Yaphank jail recently, Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon said.

The correction sergeant was physically assaulted at the Yaphank Correctional Facility on Aug. 30 by inmate Jonathan Day, 25, of Shirley, who is currently being held on second degree assault charges, Toulon said.

Day was returning to the jail from court when he became "agitated and verbally abusive" toward staff; the sergeant intervened and a physical altercation ensued, Toulon said.

As he was being subdued, Day bit down on the sergeant’s index finger and would only release the finger after multiple officers assisted in restraining him, Toulon said.

Day was seen by jail medical staff and rehoused into disciplinary housing, and the injured sergeant was seen by medical staff and given treatment, Toulon said.
