Owners Of Stony Brook Home, Where Residents Escaped 2-Alarm Fire, Set For Arraignment: Report

STONY BROOK, NY — The owners of a Stony Brook home where there was a fire earlier this month are set to be arraigned Thursday after a Brookhaven Town investigation discovered potentially life-threatening illegal housing as a 10-bedroom boarding house, News 12 reported.

Twelve people, most of them university students, were living in the off-campus home, a four-bedroom, single-family dwelling, and investigators counted 18 mattresses inside, indicating more people may have been staying there, the outlet reported.

Inspectors found bedrooms in the basement, on the first and second floors, as well as the attic, with many of the rooms numbered and secured by locks, according to the outlet.

Arson squad detectives are investigating the two-alarm fire that broke out on July 2, Suffolk police previously told Patch.

It started in a bathroom just after 4 a.m., and all of the people inside the home were able to escape to safety, according to police.

The fire was extinguished by the Setauket and Stony Brook fire departments, police said.

No injuries were reported.

It was one of at least two fires that the arson squad investigated locally within a day, officials said.
