📰 News we're reading

• Civic To Get Dialogue Started On Traffic Congestion On Mastic-Shirley Peninsula, Ahead Of Coming Developments (patch.com) — Residents on the Mastic-Shirley peninsula are pushing local officials to confront worsening traffic, especially around William Floyd Parkway in Shirley, before several large new developments are completed. A September 16 civic meeting at the Mastic Firehouse will explore ideas like opening new routes and improving access to Sunrise Highway, as projects including a larger Islamic Center of Mastic-Shirley move forward. Community leaders hope early dialogue will prevent gridlock and improve emergency evacuation options.

• 924-Megawatt Sunrise Wind Farm Off Shirley Coast 'Making Good Progress': Official (patch.com) — A massive 924-megawatt offshore wind farm is steadily rising just off Shirley's coast, with 20 turbines already installed despite last year's federal lease suspension. Developers say construction is around 40 percent complete and onshore infrastructure is mostly finished, though it's unclear if power will start flowing in October 2026 as once planned.

• 18-year-old man and 17-year-old male arrested for assault (trihamletnews.com) — Police say a white Chevy Trailblazer tied to an assault in Hauppauge later appeared on Lisa Court in Shirley, where a teen allegedly tried to rob a man on an e-scooter. An 18-year-old and a 17-year-old now face assault and attempted robbery charges, while detectives continue seeking another identified teen suspect.
