Rocky Point Man Arrested After Fatal Shirley Hit-And-Run That Killed 1, Critically Hurt Another: Police
Police say the victims were brothers from Mastic Beach who were changing a flat tire when they were struck.
SHIRLEY, NY — A Rocky Point man has been arrested following a hit-and-run crash on William Floyd Parkway that killed one man and left his brother critically injured last week, Suffolk County police said.
Following an investigation by Major Case Unit detectives, Jonathan Shaver, 51, of Rocky Point, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in fatality and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury, police said. The 2012 Honda Accord Shaver was allegedly driving at the time of the crash was recovered and impounded, according to police.
Police identified the victims as Edgar Mejia, 31, of Mastic Beach, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and his brother, Omar Mejia, 29, of Mastic Beach, who remains in critical condition at Stony Brook University Hospital.

The crash happened Thursday, Jan. 29 at around 6:45 p.m., when the two men were changing a flat tire on a vehicle parked on the side of William Floyd Parkway, just north of 1180 William Floyd Parkway, police said. A vehicle struck them and fled the scene.
Shaver was being held overnight and scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 31 at First District Court in Central Islip, police said.
