William Floyd Carpentry Students Assist in Habitat for Humanity

The students worked on painting all the rooms and ceilings, constructing steps for the back and front entrances and removing debris.

From William Floyd HS: William Floyd High School carpentry students recently volunteered their time to assist with the construction of a Habitat for Humanity home on Brookhaven Avenue in East Patchogue. Under the guidance of carpentry teacher Matthew VanHorne and technology teacher Joseph Carpinone, the students worked on painting all the rooms and ceilings, constructing steps for the back and front entrances, as well as clearing debris and other trash from the property. The three bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1200-square foot ranch with a full basement, is expected to be completed by February with the homeowners, the Cabrera family, moving in in the early spring. In order to participate in this effort, students needed to raise a $1,000 donation, which was achieved through a “beam signing,” in which students and staff purchased the opportunity to sign their name or another positive message on a beam to be used in the home, as well as a $500 donation by Empire National Bank in Shirley.
