Young Boys Learn Art Of Etiquette In Elementary School
Who else thinks every school should offer basic etiquette lessons for kids?
SHIRLEY, NY — Etiquette may be a dying art, but it's alive and well at Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School.
Penmanship, learning to tie neckties, and writing thank you notes were on the agenda as fifth grade teacher Jonathan Germer hosted the school’s first etiquette club, an after-school program for third, fourth and fifth-grade students, where they learned about proper etiquette in professional settings.
Another session covered conversational norms — and each Tuesday, students came to school dressed in a collared shirt and tie, educators said.

“Working with these young men was an absolute pleasure,” said Germer. “It is great seeing the boys using their new skills each day in the hallways and classrooms here at school.”
Due to the club’s success and popularity, Mr. Germer hopes to expand the curriculum and open the enrollment to more students in the future, the district said.
