78-Year-Old Woman Killed In Nesconset Scooter Crash: Police
Police say the woman was traveling against a red light when she was struck by a westbound minivan Monday evening.
NESCONSET, NY — A 78-year-old woman riding a motorized scooter was killed in a crash at a Nesconset intersection Monday evening, Suffolk County police said.
Jie Cao, of Nesconset, was traveling northbound on an electric-powered seated scooter on Lake Avenue South against a red traffic light when she was struck by a 2008 Toyota Sienna traveling westbound on Smithtown Boulevard with a green light around 6:35 p.m., police said.
Cao was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the Toyota, 68, of East Northport, was not injured, according to police.
Both the Toyota and the scooter were impounded for safety checks, police said.

Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are investigating the crash and are asking anyone with information to contact the squad at 631-854-8452.
