Smithtown bans e-bikes, e-scooters from parks and beaches (newsday.com) — If you ride an e-bike or e-scooter in Smithtown, you’re now barred from using them in town parks, beaches, trails, and recreation areas unless specifically exempted. The new law allows park rangers to impound vehicles, sets steep redemption fees, and requires helmets and a minimum rider age of 16, while exempting mobility devices for people with disabilities.
2. School budget passes in Smithtown; Minnigan wins open board seat (tbrnewsmedia.com) — Smithtown voters have approved the 2026–27 Smithtown Central School District budget, keeping programs intact while holding both spending and the tax levy increase to 1.85%. The $300.45 million plan relies on rising state aid to manage higher benefit costs. Voters also re-elected two board members and chose newcomer Tom Minnigan, with all terms starting July 1.
3. East Islip boys lacrosse's Grant Weiss keys defense in quarterfinal win (newsday.com) — East Islip edged Smithtown West 5–4 in a tight Suffolk Class B quarterfinal, ending Smithtown West’s season and setting up East Islip’s next playoff trip to top-seeded Smithtown East. Strong defense, including four caused turnovers by senior Grant Weiss, held Smithtown West to a season-low goal total. Smithtown players still delivered key moments in a tense final minute.
4. Long Island's History Hunt returns to celebrate America's 250th anniversary (tbrnewsmedia.com) — Smithtown residents can join this summer’s Long Island History Hunt, which includes a selfie challenge stop at the Smithtown Historical Society among 26 Revolutionary War–linked sites. Running May 23 through Sept. 30, the free regional adventure offers cash prizes, collectible trading cards, and a grand prize drawing for participants who complete multiple locations.
5. Best Buy worker accused of sending himself intimate photos from customer's phone (news12.com) — A Best Buy worker in Huntington Station was arrested after police say he secretly AirDropped intimate photos from a customer’s phone to his own device. A Smithtown resident and others voiced outrage and concern, while tech experts shared practical tips for locking down sensitive images and data before handing your phone to anyone for service.
