Al Yankovic, known for his humorous musical parodies takes on the early school age audience in this picture book about having an imagination filled with creative thoughts. On the first day of school, the energetic Billy clashes with a somber new teacher who will not believe his fanciful tales. By the end of the story we have all learned the benefits of thinking outside the box. The line that best defines Billy’s attitude is, “I’ll bet every great leader and thinker we got could see all kinds of things that others could not!” This book is a great read aloud!

Llama Llama and the Bully Goat written by Anna Dewdney
Llama Llama is back again and he and his friend are being bullied on the playground. They stand up to the bully and eventually they all become friends. The naturally flowing rhymes help to offset the difficult subject matter. This book is perfect for preschoolers and kindergartners.

Tony Baloney : School Rules written by Pam Muñoz Ryan, illustrated by Edwin Fotheringham
It is the first day of school for Tony Baloney. He’s an adorable macaroni penguin and he’s a bit nervous. He wants to follow all the class rules, but Tony has a way of finding trouble. Readers will find reassurance in this strikingly illustrated picture book. An excellent choice for the first day back!
The Surprise Attack of Jabba the Puppett : An Origami Yoda Book written by Tom Angleberger
This is a story for middle grades that combines origami, a finger puppet and Star Wars in an effort to bring real school issues to kids in a friendly way, and succeeds! This book focuses on the timely topic of standardized tests in an engaging way.
The Year of Billy Miller written by Kevin Henkes

Wonder written by R. J. Palacio
Ten-year-old Auggie Pullman, who was born with extreme facial abnormalities and was not expected to survive, goes from being home-schooled to entering fifth grade at a private middle school in Manhattan, which entails enduring the taunting and fear of his classmates as he struggles to be seen as just another student. Middle school students are sure to be engrossed in Auggie’s story.
