JWG's Grand Hodgepodge — PBS & NPR (2 poems)

Wherein JWG speaks of two lifesavers.

37. PBS

PBS,
As I have said, has been my lifesaver.
Its stories were real.

When I was bullied,
I would look forward to television
To escape my enemies.

I never liked commercials.
I do not like interrupted action.
A beginning has to be ended.

True, many shows on Public TV
Are televised as multi-part programs.
I spent the week dreaming of the characters.

The excellent programming
Inspired me to explore and imagine.
This was an education I liked.

Good television
Is rare and should always be encouraged
To exist with no worry.

The Public
Takes for granted that which is perilous
Until it’s too late.

38. NPR

NPR.
I’d wake up and turn on the radio
For the morning’s news.

A breath of fresh air
In a country dominated by scorn,
I trusted what I would hear.

I use the past tense because
I no longer listen to radio.
I need to keep my blood pressure down.

I delve in my music collection
For relaxation and my peace of mind.
I do miss listening to the radio.

Oh, I should reconsider
And tune in the voices that guided me
Through the important facts and pleasure.

I will become hooked.
I will be concerned with ev’ry story.
I will attempt to stay calm.

To learn Truth,
National Public Radio is best
For discerning ears.
