JWG's Grand Hodgepodge — Retro Food & Springtime Cold (2 poems)

Wherein JWG recalls being healthy by eating unhealthily.

73. Retro Food

Retro food
Is full of cholesterol and sugar
And lots of good taste.

Or, do we recall
Eating without thinking of what we ate
Which makes the past seem special?

Liver, whipped cream, and jell-o
Dominated many of the menus
Served in the home and in the restaurants.

A clever entrepreneur could get
Healthy people to eat unhealthy food
As a celebratory outing with Friends.

Imagine raucous laughter
As each savory dish is presented.
I hear the words, “Do you remember?”

Yes. We remember.
We can’t believe that this was considered
New-and-improved, and, scrumptious.

Our tastes change.
It is pleasant to refresh the taste buds
With forgotten foods.

74. Springtime Cold

Springtime cold
Is expected each year and wished away.
Arctic winds prevail.

Each ray of sunshine
Is savored with a gleeful countenance
Foreshadowing the Season.

If clouds clutter the blue sky,
Spontaneous shadows lack permanence.
The Sun is a flickering strobe light.

The first Spring Flowers to brave the cold
Solidify the Sun in front of eyes
That grew used to the bleak landscape of Winter.

Cold weather becomes chilly
Which behooves the much warmer days ahead
When the cooler nights would be welcome.

A week of Springtime
Wipes away horrific Winter doldrums.
Hearts and Landscapes are all warmed.

Spring’s weather,
Although extremely un predictable,
Is a sheer delight.
