JWG's Necessity June 23, 2012
Wherein JWG & René begin another thirty-plus years as a couple — now married.

Last night, at the Long Island GLBT Center in Garden City, René and I, with Jack and Tom, Artie and Jim, and nearly a hundred other people, began our celebration of being married. We had a fun evening. We got there, with Jack and Tom, a little before seven and immediately met Jim and Artie, and David Kilmnick, the Director of The Center who gave us a tour of this new, important space. I will say that not only was everyone in a great mood, the food and the desserts were exceptional.
Newsday covered this event. You can imagine my surprise when I saw that the article in today’s paper — “LIers Laud Anniversary of Same-Sex Marriage” — had, as a first paragraph, “John and René Meyer have been a couple since shortly after they first locked eyes at an Off-Broadway theater 32 years ago.”

As René and I begin our next thirty-plus years, it will be interesting to see what will happen. Looking back, I, myself, never thought we would see a day like today — a day where people say, “Congratulations!”
