UPDATE: Man Dies After Being Hit by Car in Smithtown, Driver Charged With DWI

The crash occurred Friday night.

A Smithtown man was killed when he was struck by a car on Route 111 Friday night and the driver of the car, a St. James man, is charged with DWI, police said.

According to police, 43-year-old Timothy Burke was driving a 2006 Dodge Charger north on Route 111 when his vehicle struck 51-year-old Kenneth Rich in front of 359 Route 111, just south of Maple Avenue at 8:30 p.m.

Rich was pronounced dead at the scene. Burke was charged with DWI and will be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555.
