Building Home 'Sweet' Homes for the Holidays

Elementary students get in the holiday spirit.

Second-graders at Accompsett Elementary School in Smithtown spent time before the holiday break making gingerbread houses and reading gingerbread stories.

According to teacher Kelly Bigliani, students focused on a favorite character from a gingerbread-inspired book and spoke about their choice with the class. Parents were invited to help their children with the build, while also monitoring their intake of sweets. Principal Jeanne Kull-Minarik even dropped by and accepted the challenge of bobbing for a Hershey Kiss in whipped cream!

First graders at Smithtown’s Dogwood Elementary School also celebrated the winter holidays with by building log cabin candy houses, an activity that culminated their studies on the winter holidays as part of the Social Studies curriculum.
