Smithtown Historical Society Dedicates Canoe Trip Benefit in Memory of Local Illustrator Jeffrey K. Fisher

Canoe Benefit Trip Dedicated to Memory of Local Illustrator

Smithtown Historical Society is pleased to announce that this year’s canoeing adventure will be dedicated to the memory of Jeffrey K. Fisher. Jeff, a local artist and illustrator, generously donated his time and talents to the annual Canoe Benefit Trip for many years. After his passing, it was unanimously decided by the fundraising committee overseeing the event to recognize, remember, and honor the exuberant energy and creative spirit Jeff brought to each planning meeting and to the event itself.

He created the spunky canoe critter characters featured on the event’s fliers, maps, and t-shirts. “Jeff created the face of the Canoe Trip Benefit, but it’s become more than just a branding; it’s a gift that will continue to make generations smile,” said friend and event co-chair Paul Micciche. These characters first came to life when Jeff was asked by Paul to be part of the Friends of Caleb Smith Park Preserve’s 2002 “Canoe Drift River Rally.” In 2012, the group approached the Smithtown Historical Society to come on board in hosting the family oriented event. By 2013 the Smithtown Historical Society took over the event and made it its own. Jeff was more than kind to continue sharing his talents and enthusiasm during those years of transition. “Each year Jeff cleverly added new characters to his Nissequogue River gang to represent the society,” remarked Director of Development & Public Relations Kris Melvin-Denenberg. “He always kept it fun.” Jeff’s piece for the 2015 event was not completed before his passing. However, his starting sketch will still serve as this year’s image in remembrance of our friend that left us too soon.
This year’s event is on Saturday, June 13th, beginning with a morning check-in at Nissequogue River State Park. River and a bus ride to Paul T. Given County Park for the launch. Participants then paddle down the Nissequogue River back to the state park for an all you can eat barbecue. The noon barbecue will be catered by Panico’s, have live music from Norman Vincent, and raffles. The tax deductible donation is $125per canoe/ $90per kayak and includes barbecue for canoe/kayak passengers. Double kayaks are also available. Cost to attend the barbecue only is $35.
