Car Crashes Into Pole, Causes Small Fire In Smithtown
The collision also caused power outages for over 1,400 customers, including a local middle school.

SMITHTOWN, NY - A driver crashed into a pole causing a small fire in Smithtown on Thursday afternoon, according to Suffolk Police.
Officers responded to the crash at about 4:39 p.m. on Meadow Road in front of Accompsett Middle School.
The crash resulted in a small fire, police said. In addition, the collision damaged electrical equipment and tripped a circuit that resulted in about 1,400 customers losing power.

No serious injuries were reported.
According to PSEG Long Island, all but one of those customers were restored in just over two hours.

That final customer without power was the middle school.
"PSEG Long Island takes outages affecting schools very seriously, because we do not want students to have to miss a day of instruction," a spokesperson for PSEG said. "Because of this, our crews worked into the night and early morning to quickly replace the damaged pole—a procedure that requires some heavy equipment."
Power in the school was restored by 3:00 a.m., allowing for classes to be in session on Friday.
